Faces of the Valley

When we were searching for the perfect spot to call home for Hudson Coffee Traders we had a wish list of sorts. A beautiful gallery space to hang the work of local artists was right at the top of that list -we think we hit a home run with our Round Room. It never ceases to give us a thrill when a new show gets hung and we get to live with a new artists vision for four whole weeks. This month is certainly no different as we welcome photographer Yvonne Gunner’s work to our walls.

Yvonne’s work has hung in galleries as close to home as Woodstock and Phoenecia, all over Manhattan and Brooklyn and as far away as London.  Her eclectic portfolio includes mixed media pteroglyphs, polaroid dye transfers, landscapes and flower studies. However, it is perhaps  her portraiture that she is best known for. Her clean yet intimate style allows the viewer a peek into the more personal, less revealed side of those who sit before her camera. Micheal Bloomberg, Kofi Annan, John Negroponti, Nelson Mandela and Bill Clinton are just a few of the luminaries she has been hired to photograph.

“Faces of the Valley” is a collection of portraits Gunner shot when she first moved to the area- the works showcase the rich diversity of faces that call this area home. The show goes up May 1st and will run through June.

Coffee With Kevin Pitcock

Up until a year and a half ago Kevin Pitcock, owner of  Peak Trading, was not a coffee drinker. And by that we mean he never drank coffee. Ever.

Then, one night out for dinner with a friend, he ordered an espresso, just to give it a shot (if you will). He loved it. Since then he’s been a regular here at HCT, coming to see us from his offices in West Hurley to get a cup of what he refers to as “the real deal.”

If you’ve ever seen a Broadway show where scenery or actors “fly in” from backstage, visited a ropes course (like the new one up at Hunter Mountain), seen window washers cleaning the grit off  a skyscrapers windows or witnessed an aerial rescue, chances are that the gear Kevin’s company sells was involved. Peak trading is a wholesale distributor specializing in cable, chain, wire rope, rope, rigging hardware and more. They also manufacture slings- not the kind for your arm- the kind that can be seen lifting large steel beams for the construction of skyscrapers or bridges.  Their clients include everyone from Broadway production companies, Fire Departments, Ropes courses, Rescue workers, Window washers, Bridge inspectors, Arborists, Steeple Jacks and any one else you can think of that needs to suspends, haul, repel, hang or otherwise rig.

You can find them on line at: http://www. riggingwarehouse.com or visit them at Northern Sling and Industrial Supply Full Commercial Construction Supply (wholesale to the trade) at 33 Basin Road, West Hurley

Knowing all this as we do about Kevin we couldn’t help but.. rope… him in to answer 10 QUESTIONS HCT STYLE:

We’re 3!!

If you’re a Facebook friend of ours you might know that we just had a birthday last week. It’s true, we are three years old this month and what an amazing three years it’s been.

One thing we especially love about what we do here at HCT, aside from getting to hang around great coffee all day, is getting to see  you all. You’re a pretty inspiring, interesting, energizing bunch of people. Lawyers, Politicians, Artists, Writers, Techies, Activists, Farmers, Parents, Doctors, Butchers, Bakers and yes, even a Candlestick Maker. Folks from all walks of life come into the shop everyday and we are fortunate enough to get to know you and  learn something about you, our world and ourselves.

And, you may think you know us pretty well too. But do you?

Well, we don’t want there to be any secrets between us, so we’re coming clean. Setting the record straight. After three years together we figured it’s time we clear up a few misconceptions you may have about us here at HCT.

First and foremost: Tim is not from Montana. Nope, he’s a New Paltz boy born and bred. But he did spend a lot of time in Montana and that western cowboy swagger fits him so very well we can understand the assumption.

Lyle Shuler From MAC Fitness was Donna’s first mentor over 20 years ago.

Jenna is from Indiana. 100 % pure Hoosier.

Your favorite Uptown Kingston coffee shop very well could have been Hudson Valley Java if it hadn’t been for  last minute inspiration.

That vault in the bathroom is not where we store our beans, even though we might want to think about that. Actually, the shop was built for a furrier, Leventhal Furriers, and the vault is where she stored her wares. Fur is one fashion statement we are happy to see go by the wayside.

The good folks from the Shamrock Run took all out stirrers so we have decided to make hay and revert to the good old fashioned spoon. Score another one for the green movement.

So, maybe you learned a thing or two about us but we hope you have always known that we love what we do and our customers too!
