The HCT Reading List

  Beach season may still be a couple of months away but we think any time of year is a good time to sit down with a good book, especially if it’s about, centers around or is a history of COFFEE!!

So, with out much ado here are some of our favorite reads on our favorite topic.

Coffee Philosophy for Everyone: Grounds for Debate edited by Scott F. Parker.

A collection of 18 new essay all about our favorite brew covering everything from the history, ethics, metaphysics and philosphy. A great and varied read.

God in a Cup: the Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Coffee by Michaele Weissman. A journalist treks around the globe alongside of a few of the U.S’s leading coffee roasters (Stumptown, Intelligensia, Counter Culture) to deconstruct what it is that makes for the perfect cup of coffee.

The Devil’s Cup: A History of the World According to Coffee by Stewart Lee Allen. A wild, raucus world tour of the history of the bean. “In this captivating book, Stewart Lee Allen treks three-quarters of the way around the world on a caffeinated quest to answer these profound questions: Did the advent of coffee give birth to an enlightened western civilization? Is coffee, indeed, the substance that drives history?”

Uncommon Grounds: The History of Coffee and How it Transformed Our World by Mark Pendergrast. From the Author of “For God, Counry and Coca-Cola” comes another highly caffeinated history but with a focus on economics and the social effects of the the worlds second most valuable commodity.

The Coffee Trader: A Novel by David Liss Set in 17th Century Amsterdam, David Liss’ second novel tells the story of a Portuguese Jew who sheds the confines of his culture to create a coffee dynasty with a Dutchwoman.

The Coffee Companion: A Connoisseur’s Guide by Jon Thorn. A gorgeously illustrated guide to the finest coffee’s in the world, the best blends, beans and brewing methods.
